What New Beast | Poem for July 9, 2018

Lisa DeSiro
Love Cannot Come Here

(after Sylvia Plath’s “Event”)

Who is responsible for this?

The owls tell us nothing

What became of the child?

They turned him into a wooden doll

Where did your legs go?

They fell off while we walked in circles

When did it happen?

The night of the full moon

Why did you give up your arms?

They were tired from holding emptiness

How can we help you?

Our sorrow is ineradicable
